9 to 5: the musical
Written by Patricia Resnick
Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton
This production of 9 to 5 showcased why this musical still has a lot to say about society today, highlighting themes of feminism, harassment, gender equality and fantasy. There is inspiration from the late 1970s to help set time and place. Through scenery we played with geometric designs to create specific locations using both negative and positive space. using color (or lack thereof), we indicated the state of the office and their state of mind.

I was inspired by these geometric shapes and dividers. The way that they fill a space, create the feeling of being trapped, and also create a lack of privacy are themes that carry through the story.

One of the first things we decided as a team was that we wanted a clear distinction between when the office was run by Hart and when it was run by the women.

I was also inspired by the animations and recreations of the Daily Bugle from the spiderman comics.

I always start with some quick sketches to begin the process. This is the layout of the clocks for the opening number. One big one centered with smaller ones surrounding it.

For the office, I wanted to incorporate what we eventually called the "window walls" Some spaces were open, others covered, and some with a see-through textured material.

This was the first idea for Hart's office. I knew we needed some sort of wall with a door and a shelf. I still wanted to incorporate the "window walls" here.

yes, that is me on the floor. We did this whole deck in one eight-hour call.
